Interns work five days per week (40 hours) under the supervision of a staff member in the department or office to which they are assigned.

Given the current situation due to COVID-19, selected interns may have to start working remotely from their country of nationality/residence subject to travel restrictions in effect both in their home country and Austria as well as the availability of affordable air or surface transportation as applicable.

Responsibilities

Daily responsibilities will depend on the individual’s background; the intern’s assigned office as well as the internship period. Duties may include, but are not limited to:

  1. Assist in the preparation of programme planning, budget and performance outputs.
  2. Conduct research on programme management and administration related matters, including review of UN rules and procedures.
  3. Support the Office in its fund-raising efforts, including conducting in-depth research on related matters.
  4. Draft background notes, papers, factsheets, spreadsheets and other documents in support of the Office’s programme budget, fundraising activities and other administrative obligations.
  5. Support the preparation of cost plans, monitoring and preparation of expenditure status reports and updates and supporting the review of donor reports.
  6. Provide general administrative support, including updating internal databases and other planning tools.
  7. Prepare monthly reports, summaries, meeting minutes, standard operating procedures and other management-related outputs.
  8. Supports development of new webpages relating to programme management and related matters.
  9. Perform other tasks as necessary.

Education

To qualify for an internship with the United Nations Internship Programme, the following conditions must be met:

  • Applicants must meet one of the following requirements: (a) be enrolled in a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher); (b) be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum Bachelor’s level or equivalent); or (c) have graduated with a university degree (as defined above) – OFFICIAL PROOF FROM THE UNIVERSITY IN SUPPORT OF ONE OF THE ABOVE OPTIONS HAS TO BE ATTACHED TO THE INSPIRA APPLICATION.
  • Be computer literate in standard software applications; proficiency in preparing spreadsheets;
  • Have a demonstrated keen interest in the work of the United Nations and have a personal commitment to the ideals of the Charter; and
  • Have a demonstrated ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs, which include willingness to try and understand and be tolerant of differing opinions and views.

Languages

English is the working languages of the United Nations. Fluency in English, i.e. oral and written proficiency is required. Knowledge of another official United Nations language is an advantage.

United Nations Considerations

According to article 101, paragraph 3, of the Charter of the United Nations, the paramount consideration in the employment of the staff is the necessity of securing the highest standards of efficiency, competence, and integrity. Candidates will not be considered for employment with the United Nations if they have committed violations of international human rights law, violations of international humanitarian law, sexual exploitation, sexual abuse, or sexual harassment, or if there are reasonable grounds to believe that they have been involved in the commission of any of these acts. The term “sexual exploitation” means any actual or attempted abuse of a position of vulnerability, differential power, or trust, for sexual purposes, including, but not limited to, profiting monetarily, socially or politically from the sexual exploitation of another. The term “sexual abuse” means the actual or threatened physical intrusion of a sexual nature, whether by force or under unequal or coercive conditions. The term “sexual harassment” means any unwelcome conduct of a sexual nature that might reasonably be expected or be perceived to cause offence or humiliation, when such conduct interferes with work, is made a condition of employment or creates an intimidating, hostile or offensive work environment, and when the gravity of the conduct warrants the termination of the perpetrator’s working relationship. Candidates who have committed crimes other than minor traffic offences may not be considered for employment.

By accepting an offer of appointment, United Nations staff members are subject to the authority of the Secretary-General and assignment by him or her to any activities or offices of the United Nations in accordance with staff regulation 1.2 (c). In this context, all internationally recruited staff members shall be required to move periodically to discharge new functions within or across duty stations under conditions established by the Secretary-General.
